Welcome to The Accomacke Genealogies Website, previously known as The Groton Family Trees. The name change more appropriately reflects the many families listed here as being largely from the descendants from the eastern shore of Virginia, or “land across the great water” as the local Native Americans called it. The Spanish who ran into unfriendly natives and harsh coastal marshes, first explored Accomacke. Captain John Smith performed a more extensive search of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic coastline, and based on his recommendations colonist were sent there to populate the peninsula and make salt. ”One of the first eight Shires (counties) of Virginia, its inhabitants help father this great country.”
